1910 Russia in Color by Prokudin-Gorskii

Although it is commonly believed that color photography was only invented in the 1930′s it was in fact possible as early as 1861 using a painstaking compositing process. These photos were taken with such a process and they are an incredible testament to the photographer who took them. Black and white pictures are sentimental and have artistic merits but to see Russia, and the people who lived there, in the early 1900′s in such vibrant color really brings them to life.
